Embarking on a post-doc dental residency was an amazing eye opening experience. Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) a county hospital in Buffalo, NY was a very unique training environment. I had no idea how this part of my journey would impact my clinical acumen and develop my treatment philosophy.
From the moment I arrived on the hospital grounds, it became immediately apparent that I would be immersed in a world of interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging closely with professionals from otolaryngology, behavioral health, nephrology, anesthesiology, family medicine, and the emergency department. Reviewing complex medical histories, analyzing lab values, and pathology reports became daily routine, enriching my understanding of holistic patient care and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.
I also participated in research projects investigating dental transplant clearance protocols and explored the clinical correlations of such protocols. Additionally, I participated in weekly lectures, treatment planning seminars, literature reviews, and implant study club meetings.
The clinical rotations were a whirlwind of experiences, each offering a unique perspective on patient care. From the adrenaline-fueled emergencies of the emergency room to the tender care provided in long-term facilities, and the intricate nuances of oral oncology and maxillofacial prosthodontics, every rotation left an indelible mark on my professional outlook.

One of the most enriching aspects of my dental residency was the opportunity to learn alongside my co-residents. The value of this collaborative environment cannot be overstated. Each of us brought unique perspectives, experiences, and expertise to the table, creating a vibrant tapestry of knowledge and insight. Whether it was discussing complex cases, sharing treatment approaches, or simply offering support during challenging times, our interactions were a constant source of learning and growth. This camaraderie fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect and continuous improvement, where we not only honed our clinical skills but also developed a deeper understanding of diverse patient care strategies. The collective wisdom and diverse viewpoints of my attendings & co-residents were instrumental in helping form my well-rounded, empathetic approach to dentistry.

Serving as a co-chief resident was both exhilarating and daunting. It meant shouldering the responsibility of managing medically complex patients, particularly in the realm of patients with SHCN. Conducting multiple operating room cases weekly under general anesthesia for patients with significant health challenges. This challenging role was made significantly more manageable and fulfilling thanks to the support of my kindhearted co-chief resident. His compassion, unwavering dedication, and collaborative spirit were a constant source of inspiration. His willingness to share knowledge, provide constructive feedback, and offer a listening ear during stressful times created a supportive environment that fostered both professional and personal growth. The collaboration and synergy not only enhanced our ability to manage the demanding workload but also enriched our learning experiences. I am profoundly grateful for his kindness and camaraderie, which made the daunting responsibilities of being a co-chief resident a truly rewarding endeavor.

Throughout my time at ECMC, I couldn’t have navigated the challenges and triumphs without the guidance and support of my attendings. Their wisdom, expertise, and unwavering dedication was essential to my growth as a dental professional. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each attending doctor for their mentorship, patience, and invaluable insights shared during my training. Their encouragement and belief in my potential have been instrumental in shaping me into a comprehensive and compassionate provider.
