Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry
Embarking on my dental school journey was an extraordinary privilege, and as I look back, a wave of grateful appreciation washes over me. My education at Meharry Medical College was more than just academic; it was a journey of humility & friendship, grounded in the belief that we worship God through our service to mankind.
The philosophical maxim “Gnothi se auton” (know thyself) echoed through the school of dentistry. The first year was dedicated to preclinical courses, delving into the basic sciences and fundamentals of medicine. The subsequent 3 years involved direct interaction with patients in various clinical settings. It was a hands-on experience and an opportunity to participate in the healthcare journey of others. I have a sincere appreciation for those patient interactions which reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
My dental school experience was enriched by the bonds formed with my classmates, who became more than just colleagues—they were family. We wore dark green scrubs and had been nicknamed “Troops” as we navigated the challenges of our training together. I had the honor and overwhelming responsibility to serve as the class president providing me with the opportunity to foster unity and collaboration among my peers.
During my dental school journey I was fortunate enough to participate in and serve as the president of Project DReam. A student-based organization dedicated to motivating and inspiring inner city youth to pursue careers as healthcare professionals. Our mission was to inspire youth in our community facing various challenges associated with their background. It was a gratifying experience to organize field trips with local high school students introducing them to the health sciences.
Throughout my time at Meharry Medical College, the faculty and staff created a nurturing environment for professional knowledge building. The institution has a rich history of producing graduates who contribute significantly to the field of medicine.
As I reflect on my dental school journey, I am grateful for the transformative experiences, the bonds forged, and the profound lessons learned. The foundation laid at Meharry has not only shaped me as a dentist but instilled in me a deeper sense of purpose—to continue serving and making a positive impact on the world through my profession.
